CORNERS Gdańsk

Our projects are flying to the next European corner – Gdańsk! Motto of Gdańsk „Freedom of Culture. Culture of Freedom” ensures us it will be great and inspiring journey. We will present 10 Corners project in Lower City, district which is very close to the city centre but differs from the Main City and its „Kings Road”. It is undergoing the process of revitalisation and combines green areas, Motlava river channels and old tenement houses. Stay tuned and book your time for Gdańsk between 20th and 21nd May.

Last but not least City Culture Institute, our partner from Gdańsk is hosting Corners projects. They will be shown during the weekend 21st -22nd of May in district called Lower City.

CCI is the driving force behind the cultural events in the urban space of Gdansk, exploring the ever-changing culture of the here and now, as well as providing inspiration and support for the cultural sector in the city and the region. CCI is working with and for the citizens of Gdansk. It is an open-door institution organising numerous lectures, film retrospectives, chamber concerts, craft workshops, and trainings. CCI makes possible literature and art festivals held in the public space, social events in the city, and guided tours, as well as conducting studies in the Cultural Observatory, and publishing books. Its focus is on the open culture of Gdansk and its nooks and crannies – the one which is created for and with the citizens.

Where we are going? To Gdańsk!

Gdansk is located in Pomerania, the northern region of Poland, on the Gulf of Gdansk (the Baltic Sea). It is the capital of the Pomeranian Voivodeship and the sixth largest Polish city by population. Together with the neighbouring cities of Gdynia and Sopot, it makes up Tricity, which is the fourth largest metropolitan area in Poland.

Gdansk boasts over a thousand years of history, and its identity has been influenced by various cultures through the ages. The city is regarded as the symbolic place of the breakout of World War II and the starting point of the fall of communism in Central Europe. It is the site of numerous monuments of architecture, as well as broad area of cultural and educational institutions. It is also the centre of maritime economy with a vast trading port. The city has experience in organising large events. Among others, it was one of the host cities of UEFA EURO® 2012.

In Between

Observation in philosophical terms is the process of filtering sensory information through the thought process. Input is received via hearing, sight, smell, taste, or touch and then analyzed through either rational or irrational thought. What happens if the observed object knows that he/she is being observed and the observation also changes positions so that the observer is being observed by the object? As artists we can play with these roles and also with the purpose of our observations which in contrast to the science can have a more open and indistinct objective and perhaps use different methods.

Oh My Home – Lost & Found

Borders and belonging, identity and rejection, struggle and intimacy, roots and mobility, walls and bridges. Making home. Reclaiming home. Losing and finding home. Composed of familiar elements that remind of a diversity of these experiences, the piece invites the public …

Put yourself in my place

Depending on our social background, we attribute different values to artworks, but also to different behavior patterns and to biological traits such as race, or sex. The consequence of this is always, inequality. Milijana Babić and Ida Hansson are two artists who developed their own methodologies for understanding differences in how society approaches art, through a specific long term continuous performance of swapping lives. By entering the life of the other, they did not play some kind of imitation game, but brought their own personalities into a different context.

Safari Here

Using tools and aesthetics appropriated by the Tourist Industry the artists of Safari Here are exploring the possibilities and limits of their experience and role within Corners. The work is happening in public and with the public’s participation in elements of its making.

Windows

Windows is a piece of participatory outdoor theatre, where local residents and visitors answer a series of questions on topics ranging from local to existential issues.

[VOICEOVER]

[VOICEOVER] has been developed by Corners in collaboration with local community groups and individuals. In a series of mapping workshops and live radio broadcasts Myers, Kolendo and Mucko have gathered and recorded personal stories of social, environmental and industrial
